George I. Sanchez Charter High School, San Antonio

George I. Sanchez Charter High School was founded by AAMA in 1973 and became a first-generation Texas Charter School in 1996. GIS has been locally and nationally recognized for its success with at-risk youth and pioneering efforts such as free day care and advanced computer technology programs.

George I. Sanchez (GIS) Charter High School, a division of The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA), has provided an avenue of HOPE FOR SUCCESS for many San Antonio youth who had dropped out of high school and given up on education.

Dedicated to serving at-risk youth, GIS welcomes youth who have had trouble adapting to the traditional school setting and offers them an innovating and challenging curriculum, in which they can flourish and reach their full potential. At George I. Sanchez, we believe that no child should be left behind.

After 28 years of academic success in Houston, AAMA opened the doors of its George I. Sanchez Charter High School in San Antonio in August of 2001. Over 100 drop out students re-entered the educational system thanks to George I. Sanchez and the school proudly graduated its first class in May 2002.

At George I. Sanchez we not only understand the barriers faced by youth, we offer innovative solutions to keep them focused on staying in school. Our support services include small classes with individualized attention, personal and academic counseling, an experienced and dedicated faculty.

To satisfy the educational needs of underserved, at-risk youth requires not only dedication, but also commitment and caring from all GIS staff. It is our caring staff, with their varied educational backgrounds and expertise that contribute to the wholesome learning environment that has been so successful at George I. Sanchez.

As a Texas Charter school, GIS is held to the same academic standards as any public school, by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and we rise to the challenge. Enhancement of Reading, Writing and Math skills are of utmost priority at GIS.

Our exciting and challenging curriculum includes innovative subjects such as Journalism, Publishing, Mexican American Studies, Creative Writing and Individual Family Life.

“Child Find,” another program offered by GIS is a monitored system for identifying, locating, evaluating and referring disabled individuals (up to 21 years of age) to the appropriate agency.

GIS offers short and long-term goal setting to each individual student. The ultimate goal of GIS is to make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth by providing them with a second opportunity of obtaining their academic goals. A brighter and more successful future can only be attained through education.
