AAMA Today

AAMA is located just a few miles south of downtown Houston and is now one of the most successful non-profits in the country. The Board of Directors and AAMA staff along with parents and students celebrate just a few of the "Highlights of 2000 - 2002":

In 2000, AAMA's George I. Sanchez High School ranked #1 in Reading and #2 in Math in TAAS score increases. This is an amazing accomplishment based on the high numbers of economically disadvantaged youth served.

In 2001, Sanchez students improved their scores in TAAS Reading and Writing and exceeded the 80% level for tenth-graders. Our first-time juniors scored at the 95% level in Reading and Writing, the highest in school history.

On April 17, 2002, Texas Governor Rick Perry visited Sanchez and celebrated with students, their outstanding TAAS results, which included a 23-point jump in Math and 15-point jump in Reading.

The Advanced Computing Technology Center at GIS was featured in Yahoo Magazine for its efforts to bridge the "Digital Divide." This unique partnership with the Houston Technology Center is currently one of the best technology programs for youth in the Region.

The AAMA Adelante Adult Education Center is now the largest provider of adult literacy services in Houston, resulting in almost twice as many successful outcomes versus other Houston providers. Since its inception, the Adult Education Center has trained more than 39,000 adult learners. In FY 2001, approximately 3,000 students were enrolled on an on-going basis. In a recent partnership with the YMCA in North Houston, an additional 200 students are receiving instruction.

Our Health and Human Services program is one of the largest social service providers in the State of Texas and served more than 21,256 individuals in 2001. The services are focused on both Treatment and Prevention through a "Continuum of Care" model that has been highly successful.

The newly established AAMA Family Healthcare Clinic opened its doors in May of 2001 and serves students, clients and the public. We are honored to be one of only four schools in the entire state of Texas that was selected to receive the School Based Health Clinic Grant, from the Texas Department of Health. This program works in conjunction with our childcare program for teenage parents. We have almost 150 babies in our care during the year, with 20 four-year olds in our Pre-K program. Over 500 patients are seen each month in the clinic.

AAMA ranked as the 9th largest Latino nonprofit in the nation with almost $11 million in revenues. AAMA has a unique campus with over 100,000 square feet in which to serve the many individuals who come to AAMA each year to be assisted with education, healthcare and treatment and prevention services. In 1999, AAMA's $4.0 million Multipurpose Education Center was built. It is one of the largest and most successful one-stop centers for education and social services in the country.

AAMA was awarded an $850,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Commerce in October 2001 to launch the Latino Technology Network (LTN). The LTN will link 12 diverse community based organizations and national groups to provide a nationwide information infrastructure that delivers educational programs to students. At least 20 of AAMA's high school students will be hired into the program on a part-time basis, earning $10 an hour during the implementation phase.
