Adelante (to move forward) is AAMA’s adult education division, which provides challenging courses and flexible schedules for working adults and those who wish to enter the work force. Founded in 1987, Adelante today is one of the largest adult education programs in Texas, with more than 3,000 students enrolled in day and evening classes at three Houston-area locations:
- 6001 Gulf Freeway
- 705 Cavalcade, in partnership with M.D. Anderson YMCA
- 2314 Cochran, in partnership with El Buen Pastor Church
Highlights of 2004-2005 include:
- 276 GED graduates
- 2,865 ESL graduates
- 79 students became U.S. citizens after completing citizenship classes
- Opening a new computer lab, funded by Wells Fargo, at the Cochran location
Adelante’s partners in providing adult education programs include AmeriCorps, Houston Community College System, Houston Independent School District, Houston READ Commission, Monterrey Tec University, National Council of La Raza and Texas A&M University.
Classes are free and include the following courses:
- ESL (English as a Second Language) offered in six progressive levels
- ABE (Adult Basic Education) basic instruction in math, reading and writing
- GED (General Educational Development) courses in English and Spanish prepare students for the GED test – the equivalent of a high school diploma.
- Computer Literacy courses provide students with basic computer and internet skills and prepare them for a professional work atmosphere.
- Citizenship classes prepare students for the oral and written U.S. Citizenship tests.
- The Texas Engineering Extension Service of Texas A&M University offers Adelante graduates training in the following areas:
- Air Conditioning Technician
- Plate and Pipe Welding
- Computer Administrative Assistant
Adelante also provides free day care to qualifying students, job search assistance and gently worn business attire for graduates entering the work force.
