Honoring Maria “Cris” Garza

More than 100 friends, family members, staff, students, and board members past and present gathered in January to pay tribute to long-time board member and educator Maria “Cris” Garza and rename AAMA’s multi-purpose building in her honor. The newly-named Maria “Cris” Garza Student Center sits at the heart of AAMA’s Gulf Freeway campus and houses classrooms, library, and the combination gymnasium, cafeteria, and auditorium.

Garza marked her 22ndyear of service on the AAMA Board of Directors on Jan. 1, 2012. During hertenure, she has served on numerous committees, assisted in the classrooms at Sanchez Charter School, participated in fundraising efforts, and spearheaded the formation of an AAMA alumni organization.

“Cris has the heart and soul of a true educator,” said Beatrice Garza, president and CEO of AAMA. “All of her efforts have been directed toward doing whatever she can to ensure that students have the support they need to be successful in school and graduate.”

The eighth of 14 children, Cris Garza was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor’s degree from Pan American College and later, a master’s degree in education from Texas A&M University. She devoted 35 years to the welfare and education of children as a math teacher, counselor, supervisor, personnel specialist, and parent liaison in the Edcouch-Elsa, Victorville, and San Antonio Independent School Districts, and at Houston ISD where she retired after 28 years of service.

In acknowledging Garza’s service, Board President Raul Dominguez said that she displayed unmatched passion for the students and families, for education, and for AAMA.

More than 100 friends, family members, staff, students, and board members past and present gathered in January to pay tribute to long-time board member and educator Maria "Cris" Garza and rename AAMA's multi-purpose building in her honor. The newly-named Maria "Cris" Garza Student Center sits at the heart of AAMA's Gulf Freeway campus and houses classrooms, library, and the combination gymnasium, cafeteria, and auditorium.

"Cris has the heart and soul of a true educator," said Beatrice Garza, president and CEO of AAMA. "All of her efforts have been directed toward doing whatever she can to ensure that students have the support they need to be successful in school and graduate."

The eighth of 14 children, Cris Garza was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor's degree from Pan American College and later, a master's degree in education from Texas A&M University. She devoted 35 years to the welfare and education of children as a math teacher, counselor, supervisor, personnel specialist, and parent liaison in the Edcouch-Elsa, Victorville, and San Antonio Independent School Districts, and at Houston ISD where she retired after 28 years of service.

In acknowledging Garza's service, Board President Raul Dominguez said that she displayed unmatched passion for the students and families, for education, and for AAMA.

"You set the standard for all of us as board members," Dominguez said.

Sanchez Student Selected for Mayor’s Youth Council

Ramiro Jimenez, a senior at AAMA’s Sanchez Charter School, was inaugurated in October as one of 39 members of the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC). Jimenez was selected from more than 400 applicants across Houston, based on a competitive written application and personal interview, and is the first student from Sanchez to serve on

		the MYC.

Modeled after the elected City Council, the MYC meets twice a

month in public session. Members of the council help make decisions affecting Houston’s youth and participate in community service projects throughout their term.

“Ramiro is a leader,” said Albert Perez, the counselor at Sanchez who encouraged Jimenez to apply for the MYC. “I hope other students watch how he is getting involved and follow his example.”

Jimenez transferred to Sanchez after his freshman year because a friend told him about the school’s smaller size, credit recovery, and dual credit programs. At Sanchez he turned his grades around, played linebacker on the Eagles football team, and already has earned 12 hours of college credit.

“I’ll be the first in my family to graduate from high school,” Jimenez said. After graduation in June, he plans to continue his studies at Houston Community College working toward an Associate’s Degree in engineering

Ramiro Jimenez, a senior at AAMA's Sanchez Charter School, was inaugurated in October as one of 39 members of the Mayor's Youth Council (MYC). Jimenez was selected from more than 400 applicants across Houston, based on a competitive written application and personal interview, and is the first student from Sanchez to serve on

		the MYC.

Modeled after the elected City Council, the MYC meets twice a

month in public session. Members of the council help make decisions affecting Houston's youth and participate in community service projects throughout their term.

"Ramiro is a leader," said Albert Perez, the counselor at Sanchez who encouraged Jimenez to apply for the MYC. "I hope other students watch how he is getting involved and follow his example."

Jimenez transferred to Sanchez after his freshman year because a friend told him about the school's smaller size, credit recovery, and dual credit programs. At Sanchez he turned his grades around, played linebacker on the Eagles football team, and already has earned 12 hours of college credit.

"I'll be the first in my family to graduate from high school," Jimenez said. After graduation in June, he plans to continue his studies at Houston Community College working toward an Associate's Degree in engineering

Give to AAMA

Your gift makes our work possible. Gifts of every size have an impact on our students and clients. By supporting AAMA, you do three things: help increase the number of Latino youth graduating from high school and going to college; help adults learn the skills that will allow them to advance in the workforce; and help people of all ages learn to resist drugs, overcome addictions, and make positive choices for their lives. Why Give What does your gift mean to AAMA? Just a few of the many things your gift makes possible: Caps and gowns for our high school students, many of whom are the first in their families to graduate. Dictionaries and flash cards for our students determined to learn English. After-school activities that give kids a real alternative to getting involved with gangs. Ways to Give Give securely online through our partnership with GuideStar, here. You can mail a check or money order, payable to AAMA, Inc., to: AAMA,...

AAMA History

The People Who Founded AAMA In 1969, Houston's East End was plagued with problems of drug abuse, school dropouts, teen pregnancy and juvenile crime. A small group of students, businessmen and teachers banded together to discuss how they could reduce drug abuse, keep teens in school, provide wholesome recreational opportunities and prepare students to become leaders. As a result of their discussions, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans was formed in 1970. The first board included: Luis Cano Froilan Hernandez Ninfa Laurenzo Roland Laurenzo David Martinez Yolanda Navarro Offering recreation and other programs out of an old house on Sampson Street, AAMA received its first grant of $40,000 to provide youth services in 1971. Now, 38 years later, AAMA's budget exceeds $15 million and the organization helps more than 23,000 people annually. Historic Highlights 1970 - Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans founded ...
