Adelante Adult Literacy

Adelante (to move forward) is AAMA's adult education division, which provides challenging courses and flexible schedules for working adults and those who wish to enter the work force. Founded in 1987, Adelante today is one of the largest adult education programs in Texas, with more than 3,000 students enrolled in day and evening classes at three Houston-area locations: 6001 Gulf Freeway 705 Cavalcade, in partnership with M.D. Anderson YMCA Highlights include: 276 GED graduates 2,865 ESL graduates 79 students became U.S. citizens after completing citizenship classes Opening a new computer lab, funded by Wells Fargo, at the Cochran location Adelante's partners in providing adult education programs include AmeriCorps, Houston Community College System, Houston Independent School District, Houston READ Commission, Monterrey Tec University, National Council of La Raza and Texas A&M University. Houston - Casa Phoenix

The Casa Phoenix Program is one of many services offered by AAMA to youths who live in the city of Houston and in the Region 6. (Counties serviced: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Ft. Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller, and Wharton county.) Casa Phoenix provides substance abuse treatment to males 13-17 years of age. All services are Bilingual and offer Residential and Outpatient Counseling. Residential Treatment A residential twenty-four (24) bed treatment facility that houses residents for a period of 30-60 days. The Residential component utilizes a structured program that encourages participation of the family for the treatment of the youth. Within this approach, a level and points system is featured. The resident's advancement through the level system will help to determine their progress in the Program. The People Who Founded AAMA In 1969, Houston's East End was plagued with problems of drug abuse, school dropouts, teen pregnancy and juvenile crime. A small group of students, businessmen and teachers banded together to discuss how they could reduce drug abuse, keep teens in school, provide wholesome recreational opportunities and prepare students to become leaders. As a result of their discussions, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans was formed in 1970. The first board included: Luis Cano Froilan Hernandez Ninfa Laurenzo Roland Laurenzo David Martinez Yolanda Navarro Offering recreation and other programs out of an old house on Sampson Street, AAMA received its first grant of $40,000 to provide youth services in 1971. Now, 38 years later, AAMA's budget exceeds $15 million and the organization helps more than 23,000 people annually. Proyecto Ganadores - Edinburg

Proyecto Ganadores is an intensive intervention counseling program for youth ages 11-17 who are experimenting primarily with methamphetamines and are involved with other drugs.

Outreach services to identify youth will be provided to assist youth in the counties of Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy. The program will provide case management services to include guidance counseling, and advocacy, follow-up and recreational activities.

Proyecto Ganadores will focus on services for the family and curriculum based groups using the "Creating Lasting Family Connections" (CLFC) curriculum, an evidenced based curriculum proven to be effective with program's target population.

Proyecto Ganadores will also organize a community coalition that will address the issues of youth using Methamphetamines and to develop in partnership strategies for youth and their families.

The NEL Program - Edinburg

NEL/CHL – the Narcotic Education League and Concilio Hispano Libre programs serve individuals in South Texas who have a long history of addiction to opiates and other drugs. Through treatment that integrates counseling and life skills training, patients are able to eliminate their dependence on drugs, work and function normally in the community.

Ninos Primero Prevention Services – this Rio Grande Valley program seeks to prevent substance abuse problems in the lives of at-risk children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.
